For over 50 years Greenline Service has served the
Fredericksburg area. The company was originally founded in
1950 under the name Brown Brothers and Company. The
company’s original founders were Raymond Brown, Ashby Brown,
Bernard Driver and Madeline Driver. The company operated in
two small buildings at 632 and 634 Kenmore Avenue. One
building housed the parts, sales and administrative offices
while the other building included a two-stall shop for
service.

Seven years later Brown Brothers incorporated and the company
expanded for the first time. A new building was erected on the
Kenmore Avenue site that not only allowed all operations to be
combined in one building, but also increased the size of the
service area. The original buildings were converted into storage
facilities for the company. In August 1966 Maurice Satterwhite
became a partner in the company by purchasing the interest of
Ashby Brown. Two years later Brown Brothers had outgrown their
Kenmore Avenue location, and with further expansion not an
option, moved the entire operation to today’s location on
Tidewater Trail. |

In the fall of 1968 a second location was opened in Culpeper.
Brown Brothers continued to grow over the next few years. In
1973 Scott Cook joined the company and became a stockholder
the following year. In June 1974 Frank Hopkins resigned from
his position with John Deere to become a stockholder and
President of Brown Brothers.
Under the leadership of Hopkins, Brown Brothers changed their
name to Greenline Service Corporation in January
1976. A major change in ownership occurred two years later.
James Lafferty, who had been with the company since 1977,
became a stockholder. He joined Frank Hopkins and Scott Cook
as the only stockholders in the company when the others
elected to sell their interests back to the company in
August 1978. Later that year the decision was made to close
the Culpeper facility. Operations were transferred by March
1979 and the property was subsequently sold. |

Later in 1979 the facility at Tidewater Trial was completed
renovated. This renovation doubled the building’s size by
adding parts storage space as well as expanding the service
area. Scott Cook made the decision to leave the company as
stockholder in 1984. |

Over the next 20 years Greenline Service continued to
grow and expand. A warehouse was built in 1996. By the turn of
the century a new phone system was installed as well as a
computer network used by all departments. In 2004 Clint Hopkins
purchased the interest of James Lafferty and with his father
became the sole shareholders of Greenline Service. They
continue to lead the company today.
